Celebrating 25 years

of Venture Philanthropy

Over 25 years, Social Venture Partners (SVP) Vancouver has invested Money + Time where others don’t—in the leadership and infrastructure that make lasting change in our community possible. We give differently so more B.C. kids and families can thrive.

How it all began

SVP Vancouver began in 2001, when a group of 24 visionary leaders from Vancouver's technology and business community came together around a simple but ambitious idea: philanthropy could do more than write cheques. Inspired by the venture philanthropy model emerging in Seattle, they set out to build an organization that would pair Money with Time—combining their capital with expertise, connections, and long-term partnership to help nonprofits grow stronger. What began as the British Columbia Technology Foundation became Social Venture Partners Vancouver—one of the earliest SVP chapters in the world—and over 25 years, that model has evolved into a proven approach to strengthening nonprofits serving children, youth, and families in B.C. From the Founding Partners

“I originally was drawn to SVP Vancouver by the idea that we would achieve more by doing things together than we could by acting only as individuals. Twenty-five amazing years have proven that critical mass and leverage really do matter in philanthropy. Looking forward to many more years together!”

— David Sutcliffe, SVP Founding Partner

“SVP was conceived as a grand experiment to see if we could leverage our financial donations with our time, training and experience. Twenty-five years later—across all sectors from social enterprise to youth to family—the experiment has delivered results beyond our wildest dreams. I am confident that SVP will reach new heights in addressing society's challenges, at scale.”

— Jim Fletcher, SVP Founding Partner

“In the early days I was eager to help get SVP off the ground because I believed that the tech industry should do more for the disadvantages in our community. We wanted a way to apply our entrepreneurial spirit to social causes, taking bold risks on the next generation of social entrepreneurs. ”

— Norm Francis, SVP Founding Partner

“We underestimate the role SVP's leadership development plays in building strong, resilient nonprofits. By investing in people and strengthening organizational capacity, we now have more nonprofits better able to address complex challenges and fostering connections resulting in a more equitable and vibrant future for everyone.”

— Don Safnuk, SVP Founding Partner

“SVP was love at first sight. Social. Venture. Partners. It’s a model that works. Together we invest in innovative ventures we believe will deliver high returns. And we get big payback in the form of improvements to the lives of children.”

— Judy Gale, A First Contributor to SVP (2002)

2021-Beyond

A legacy of impact up to today and looking forward. Where SVP is going next.

SVP Impact

Since 2001, SVP has contributed more than $16.5 million dollars and thousands of volunteer hours to more than 70 nonprofits in our community. Nonprofits who, because of SVP's Money + Time model, have gone on to impact countless children, youth, and families across B.C.

Impact in Action

“It's incredible what becomes possible when people really hear you. SVP doesn't just ask what we need—they actively help us build the capacity to achieve it.”

— Ricky Lee, Promise Vancouver

“My son has done 3 seasons of the Early RISErs program and has gotten great benefit from it with preschool preparation. The teachers are so nice and patient, the space is great, the program is very consistent and Challenging, and the activities educational and fun. My son loved his 'play class' and will miss it, but I am confident he is ready for preschool now. I highly recommend this program, and the tuition is adjustable depending on your income level, to increase accessibility.”

— Parent of Lightwell Learning (Formerly LDS) Early RISEers learner

“If more than 400 volunteers from this community—none who know me—were willing to invest their time to be here for ME, it made me realize that I do have a place in this world, and I'm going to fight to be a part of it.”

— Cinderella Project Student

“I used to doubt myself as a parent. Now I feel confident and supported.”

— Parent participant, New Westminster Family Place

“My life was impacted in so many positive ways. I realize I can care for my child by own means, and that my work is a viable way to contribute to both my healing and my financial support.”

— BCSTH Bursary Recipient

“I realized I wanted to work closer to the people being served rather than solely in jacket-and-tie board positions.”

— Neil Duke, Lead Partner to four organizations

“One of the most powerful aspects of this funding is the ecosystem SVP creates. I've connected with leaders I wouldn't have met otherwise, and those connections have turned into real collaboration. The capacity-building support opened doors to academic partnerships, policy discussions, and learning opportunities shaping the next chapter of New West Family Place—mentorship, public advocacy, and systems change. It's not just about making our organizations stronger. It's about building stronger early years sector—and that's what SVP is doing.”

— Dana Osiowy, Executive Director, New Westminster Family Place
