Strengthening Nonprofits, One Conversation at a Time: An Evening with BCSTH

Last week, SVP Partners rolled up their sleeves to support the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) in a way that’s uniquely SVP: by listening, sharing ideas, and finding the places where experience, networks, and insights can help a nonprofit grow. The evening was all about the “strengthen” part of our model; deepening BCSTH’s connection to our community and helping them move forward with bold plans for their Bursary Fund.

Hosted in Natalie Marchesan & Ron Klopfer’s beautiful West Vancouver home, with stunning views and warm hospitality, this was more than just a gathering,  it was SVP’s mission in action. Partners, staff, and even a “Partner-Curious” (her words!) guest offered thoughtful feedback on BCSTH’s fundraising, donor stewardship, and storytelling strategies.

Our guests of honour were BCSTH, an SVP Investee dedicated to supporting 136 frontline organizations that serve over 18,000 women, children, and youth fleeing violence each year, from Fernie to Haida Gwaii. Their members run transition houses, safe homes, and long-term housing, providing critical lifelines across the province.

At the heart of the conversation was BCSTH’s Bursary Fund (BBF) — a flexible, dignity-centered program helping survivors rebuild their lives with awards of $500-$3000 they can choose to spend on education, training, and entrepreneurship. Since 2019, the BBF has provided over $453,000 in support, empowering 170 women and 249 children. One recipient is now a pilot, a dream made possible by her bursary. Others have pursued careers such as real estate agent, software developer, CPA, registered nurse and food truck owner — each story a testament to resilience, possibility, and hope.

“We want to empower women to build forward, and we don’t want them to think they have to pay something back. This is not about paying back, it’s about empowerment and dignity.” – Amy FitzGerald, Executive Director, BCSTH

The night wasn’t just about discussion — it was about connection, and enjoying great company. Guests shared a meal of chicken pot pie, creamy polenta with mushrooms, and Hungarian goulash (most couldn’t resist sampling all three), followed by tiramisu and brownies. Note: future hosts, while Natalie truly outdid herself, we promise no one expects this level of culinary magic every time!
