Investing in Mothers and Creating New Possibilities for Families

When mothers have access to financial stability, children gain safety and opportunity. Through its partnership with BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH), SVP Vancouver is helping expand economic pathways for women leaving violence, creating new possibilities for families across B.C.

Originally launched in 2019 and strengthened through SVP Vancouver’s Series A grant in 2024, the BCSTH Bursary Fund provides flexible funding for women who have experienced violence through one-time grants that support education and employment needs. Whether it is for childcare to attend class, transportation to get to work, tuition to pursue training, or resources to start a small business, the bursary removes immediate barriers to independence. Funds are provided without repayment requirements, trusting women to determine what they need to move forward.

SVP Vancouver’s partnership extends well beyond the Series A grant. BCSTH has accessed wraparound support, including:

  • Fund development coaching through our agreement with external experts at New School of Fundraising
  • A brainstorm at last year’s social dialogue event hosted by Natalie Marchesan and Ron Klopfer, with live feedback to strengthen their pitch
  • Strategic connections and advisory support from Partners, including Mary McGivern, who graciously connected them with fundraising consultants Fawkes and Holly, and generously funded this work
  • Ongoing social impact evaluation support with SVP’s Strategy and Social Impact Coach Karen Gelb

This hands-on partnership has enabled the bursary to evolve towards a sustained and growing initiative, with $110,000 in bursaries projected for 2026.

Since its inception in 2019, the BCSTH Bursary Fund has supported 199 women, indirectly benefited 283 children, and distributed $539,548 in funding.

“My life was impacted in so many positive ways, I realize I can care for my child by my own means, and that my work is a viable way to contribute to both my healing, and my financial support.” – BCSTH Bursary Recipient

By increasing women’s economic security, the bursary reduces the risk of women returning to unsafe situations, stabilizes families, and strengthens long-term outcomes for children. If you would like to learn more about the bursary or explore how to deepen your involvement, please reach out to BCSTH’s Bursary Fund Coordinator Louise Godard or Janelle, SVP’s Director of Engagement.
